Do Not Use the Australian Self Publishing Group

Hey guys, if you have stumbled across this post it’s probably because you are a would-be writer trying to make it on your own and are looking for some advice on the services of the Australian Self Publishing Group... just like I was a few months ago. I came across the services of the ASPG after a friend of mine forwarded an email she had received from the NSW Writers Centre.

Animated Book Trailer

My good friends at Sambo Media (Awesome animation company in Sydney Australia) were nice enough to create a trailer to promote my book ANIMAL FRIENDS: FLOATING ORANGE CUBES. The clip features and elephant travelling through a television screen, falling through the clouds and doing a big smelly poo all over a parakeet standing on the ground below him. Classic.

The thinking here was to just make a book trailer that was unlike any other that had ever been created before. It had to be weird. It had to not make a whole lot of sense. And most importantly, it had to have poo in it. A perfect representation of the book itself. I think if you don’t like this trailer, there may be a good chance you wont enjoy reading the book. And that’s the purpose of a good trailer right?

Classroom Skyping With School Kids

Last week I had the awesome opportunity to hold a Skype session with the students at Lewisham Public School in NSW. Thanks to the magic of technology (my phone), I was able to chat with the kids about some of my favourite books I used to read when I was in School. Alice In Wonderland being one of them... no not the movie... I’m talking about the Lewis Carol story of the same name. The one that the film was based on. Did you know that the Alice In Wonderland book was actually banned from China in 1931 for depicting animals with human characteristics?

I also got to share my book ANIMAL FRIENDS: FLOATING ORANGE CUBES (another story portraying animals with human traits) with them and did a reading of one of the Chapters. Afterwards, it was time for some Q and A and I got to answer some of the children’s questions about what it’s like being an author and how important and enjoyable it is to read books.

The event was a part of celebrating Book Week and encouraging kids to read. Marvellous event! Every week should be Book Week if you ask me. I had so much fun and can’t wait to do it again. I would just like to thanks the students for offering me such a warm reception and the extremely helpful teaching staff at Lewisham for being so accommodating.

I will indeed be sure to visit Lewisham Public School in the future to deliver their School Library a signed copy of ANIMAL FRIENDS: FLOATING ORANGE CUBES and to meet and greet the kids in person. Will be sure to post proof of this happening to my Facebook page in the not too distant future.

If you are a student, teacher, librarian, groundskeeper or member of some sort of School faculty and you would like me to hold a Skype session with your school, details on how to get in touch with me are on my contact page. I am available to chat with student all over the world using the magic of Skype. Thanks Skype.

Book Launch For Book Week

Today I had the amazing pleasure of returning to St Dominic’s Centre for Hearing Impaired Children to launch my book ANIMAL FRIENDS: FLOATING ORANGE CUBES.

The event coincided with the Book Week theme of ‘Across The Universe’, so everyone was dressed up in their fanciest outer space costumes. I myself was dressed as an outer space cheese grating cowboy from the planet that orbits the star Gamma Cephei... obviously.

InDesign file template of an EPUB

When I created my latest children’s story, I looked everywhere online for an InDesign file template that would easily export an EPUB file and I couldn’t find one good enough. So, I started from scratch and just made my own. If you find yourself in a similar situation, well look no further. You can have mine.

Book Release Update

My first ever full length children’s book (that I have poured blood, sweat and tears into over the last several years) will be available from this website on 2 September 2013. Throw this date into your calendar.

Funny to think it has taken me this long to spit out 10,000 or so words. I promise that the next book release will come a lot sooner than this one. I have learnt so much about storyboarding ideas and time management.

Beresfield’s Book Giving Assembly

Well then, another amazing afternoon of giving out children’s books was had today at Beresfield Public School in NSW. As a part of the Books In Homes initiative to provide children across Australia with more books, myself and fellow Children’s Author Katrina Mckelvey visited the school to meet the kids and chat about the importance of reading and writing.

This all took place in a special Book Giving Assembly where the kids were presented with their well-deserved bundle of books that they got to choose for themselves. It was such great fun to be apart of! I don’t think I have ever experienced more high-fives in such a short amount of time!

The kids also put on an AMAZING performance of my new favourite song of ALL TIME... ‘Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches’ (Not only are the music and lyrics great, but the dance moves that go along with the song were perfectly choreographed and hilarious to watch.).

Christmas Book Video

After the success that my book Romy’s Garden Adventures: Christmas City experienced during the last holiday season, I thought it might be high time I shared this book with everyone on the internet for free... in video form

The President reads my stories

Political children’s book satire pushes democratic agenda

The Romy’s Garden Adventures series of children’s books I created has apparently become a hit with the kids at the White House in Washington DC. Barack Obama recently read the first instalment of the series at Sidwell Friends School where his daughters Maila and Sasha are known to attend.
